Memorial Day Meme

Memorial Day is much more than an excuse for a three-day weekend, summer's first barbecue, or a family sojourn.

Many seem to grow more patriotic on this annual national holiday, which was originally known as Dedication.

Do you know what Memorial Day really means?

Here's a telling quotation from America's first President that seems to fit (even though Memorial Day didn't become an actual holiday during his lifetime).

"Guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism."
George Washington
(1732-1799)

What does that quote mean to you? What is pretended patriotism? Have you ever witnessed it?

Have you written a post about this holiday and its history, traditions, or celebrations?

You are invited to comment, perhaps including a link to your own Memorial Day post.
