On November 26, 1789, George Washington, the first American President, declared the date to be the first national Thanksgiving Day. From that date on, U.S. Presidents declared a national Thanksgiving Day holiday. Finally, in 1863, President Abraham Lincoln officially proclaimed the fourth Thursday in November as the annual Thanksgiving Day.
On this date, Americans everywhere are reminded to recall the Plymouth Pilgrims, their Mayflower ocean journey and the Divine Providence that established their little community in the New World. May we follow the example of the original American Pilgrims and be thankful for the many blessings we enjoy.
