Clowns

All Aboard the Meme Express – Saturday, March 21, 2009

Stephen Sondheim, American composer, lyricist, and Pulitzer Prize winner (1984), was born on March 22, 1930.

One of Stephen Sondheim’s most memorable songs is “Send in the Clowns,” which he composed as part of the 1973 Broadway musical A Little Night Music. The beloved ballad has been recorded by many popular artists, including Shirley Bassey, Judy Collins, Glynis Johns, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Steisand and others.

Here is “Send in the Clowns,” as performed in 1990 at the New York Opera by Sally Ann Howes with George Lee Andrews.

  2. Clowning with Class
Marcel Marceau was a champion Saddlebred showhorse and beloved equine friend. He died from colic-related illness on November 12, 2008. The Clownface will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him. Here's my tribute to Marcel Marceau.

  3. Humor Theory: A Trio of Ticklers
Laughter is great medicine! What do we find funny? What makes us laugh? Comedy theorists have proposed three basic premises for humor. Most jokes, prank, and comic efforts do fall into one of these areas.

Before a child knows A-B-Cs, He certainly has learned to tease. He'll jab and jeer and joke and jest; He has to prove that he's the best.
