On July 9, 1956, Dick Clark began hosting American Bandstand. Clark was 26 years old at the time. American Bandstand became a mainstay of popular culture, introducing such rock-and-roll artists as Chuck Berry, Chubby Checker, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis and others. In fact, the first song played on the show was Chuck Berry's "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On."
